Every year major students who took commerce in the 12th class pursue a Bachelor’s degree in commerce, known as B.com.
This is a 3 to 4years undergraduate business degree. In some countries like Canada, Ireland, etc. the duration is 4 years, but most countries like India, Nepal, Australia, etc. have 3 years of B.com program.

Not only managerial skills, once you start pursuing B.com, but you’ll also interact with many other subjects like HR ( Human Resources ), Economics, Marketing, Actuarial Studies, Accounting, etc.
Let’s see some history on B.com or Bachelor of Commerce. The first university that was offering B.com was the University of Birmingham.
An Englishman William Ashley founded the University’s School of Commerce. At the Toronto university, William Ashley was the first professor of Constitutional History & Political Economy.
In 1892, he left Toronto university and joined Harvard University for a few years.
After spending some years at Harvard University, he returned to England and joined the new University of Birmingham, where he established the School of Commerce.
William Ashley was the man behind today’s degree of B.com. He was also the forerunner of many other Bachelor of Commerce Program.

What is B.com?
B.com or Bachelor of Commerce is a business degree or course, which takes 3 to 4 years to be completed. In some countries, the duration can go 4 years, and in some, it can take 3 years.
But if I assume that you want to pursue a B.com degree from India, it will take 3 years or 6 semesters to complete your degree.
During your course, you’ll learn about many subjects like HR ( Human Resources ), Economics, Marketing, Actuarial Studies, Accounting, etc.

Admission Process
Just like any other common degrees like B.Sc, BA, BCA, BBA. There are two ways that you can use to take admission. The first way is the direct way, and the second one is the entrance exam way. Below I have mentioned both the ways in-depth. Have a look!
1. Direct
If you want to take the direct way, you have to fight any exam for your seat. You can directly go to a college and apply for admission.
But before applying for admission, make sure that college doesn’t take the entrance exam.
There are some eligibility criteria that will apply for whether you want to take the direct way or the entrance exam way. Below I have mentioned the eligibility criteria, have a look:-
- Candidates must have completed their 10+1 or 12th class examination with at least 50%.
- Candidates must have studied Commerce in 12th class with Business Studies, Economics, Accountancy. Maths is optional.
2. Entrance Exam
Some specific colleges only give admission to those who clear the entrance exam conducted by their college. So if you want to pursue B.com from some big and reputed colleges of India, you can apply for the entrance exams like Christ University Entrance Test, AMU Entrance Exam, and DUET( Delhi University Entrance Test ), Jamia Millia Islamia Entrance exam. The eligibility criteria I mentioned above will also apply in this way or method.

The below-given subjects you’ll find in the majority of colleges B.com or Bachelor of Commerce program. But I am not saying that these are all you can find in the Bachelor of Commerce program. There can be some minor variations in the list. It will depend from college to college:-

Honestly speaking, if you have just passed out from a college and you don’t have much experience and knowledge, then you can’t expect to get a 10 lakh annual package.
Also, there are some factors that will decide how much salary you’ll get. Factors such as the college you graduate from, how much knowledge and skill you have, etc.
But if we talk about the average salary of a B.com graduate in India. Then it can be around 3.2 lakh per year. Talking about the minimum you can get is 1.8 to 2 lakh per year package, and a maximum you can get is 4 to 5 lakh per year package.
